Dr Nadia Durrani, editor of CWA says: " in addition to updates on iconic sites such as Troy and Ephesus, this sensational Special Issue, will also explore many much less well-known sites, such the coastal site of Myra – home to the 4th century bishop, St Nicolas (of Santa Claus fame) - and Arycanda, a gem of an ancient city set high in Turkey’s south-western mountains."
Other features both cover the latest landmark discoveries in Turkey beginning in Yenikapi in Istanbul, European Capital of Culture 2010, and moving onto explore an array of compelling sites; in particular those on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list 2009 including the Lycia region, Perge, Sagalassos and Catalhoyuk – in addition to Turkey’s most recently excavated sites such as Metropolis and Laodikeia – not forgetting Turkey’s biggest and oldest excavation sites such as Ephesus, Troy and Caunos. Turkish and foreign experts and academics, including excavation directors, provide an unparalleled insight into these archaeological riches and cultural touristic highlights.
The travel section focuses on Olba, the archaeology-rich region of south-eastern Turkey between the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains, and the Lycian city of Arycanda in the southwest with its magnificent archaeology and panoramic views.
Dr Aysegul Gurgezoglu, Deputy Director of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK says: “We are delighted to be involved in this special issue of Current World Archaeology which highlights a side of Turkey that many are not fully aware of – a country brimming with archaeological treasures waiting to be explored from countless past civilisations and cultures.”
This special issue of Current World Archaeology also includes a fantastic not-to-be missed competition to win a cultural gulet cruise for two in western Lycia with Peter Sommer Travels, leading provider of specialist archaeological tours, gulet cruises and private charters. The winners will join the Sailing Western Lycia cultural gulet cruise led by Dr Nigel Spivey, Lecturer in Classics at Cambridge University, between Saturday 25 September and Saturday 2 October 2010.
