Culture Routes in Turkey

Turkey is a huge country, with thousands of years of history, wild and beautiful scenery and friendly and hospitable people. Turkey’s maze of old roads and trails are now being opened, combined into long-distance cultural routes and clusters of day-walks.

The first long-distance route was the Lycian Way, which was launched 10 years ago, and has inspired other Turkish and international trail-builders. Trails in Turkey are still in their infancy – but developing fast.

This site tells you about the parts of Turkey where you can trek, the types of walk you can do and other activities like biking  or horse-riding.

From this site you can buy a guidebook to most of the routes. You can find a tour operator to suit you or information about trekking independently.  It also gives you links to all the background information you need to plan an active holiday exploring Turkey’s Cultural Routes.

The main problems are lack of large-scale walking maps, lack of high-standard accommodation and variable rescue services. However, most routes now have a guide book, some are waymarked, all have GPS points. If you are fairly self-reliant, can use a GPS and like camping, these are assets not problems! More mature routes like the Lycian Way have plenty of group walks or self-guided options, easy communications, a huge range of accommodation and are still not over-used.
